Simple Self-Check: Know Your Normal, Protect Your Health

The most prevalent cancer among women in India is breast cancer, but with early diagnosis, the survival rates are much higher. The most potent habit a woman can develop is free and can be performed in less than five minutes: monthly breast self-examination. In combination with professional breast cancer screening in Bangalore, this simple routine can be life-saving.

What Is a Breast Self-Examination?

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a self-examination that you do at home to become familiar with how your breasts normally appear and feel. The aim is not to diagnose; it is to observe changes. Once you are aware of your baseline, anything that is out of the ordinary will be noticed quite fast, leading to previous medical treatment.

How to Perform a Breast Self-Check

Step 1: Visual check in the mirror. Stand naked with your arms loosely held at your sides before a mirror. Check to see any noticeable changes in the size, shape or texture of the skin on the breasts. Then lift both arms up in the air again. Examine dimpling, puckering or any alteration of the direction of the nipple.

Step 2: Examine your nipples. Gently squeeze one nipple, then the other, and check them for any unusual discharge, especially when it is bloody, clear or discharges without pressure.

Step 3: Lie down. Lie flat with one arm behind your head. With the pads of your three middle fingers, press firmly, in a circular motion, on the whole breast, on the armpit to the cleavage, and on the collarbone to the belly. Repeat on the other side.

Step 4: feel as you stand or sit. Repeat the circular examination as you stand. This is easier for many women in the shower when the skin is wet and smooth.

The most appropriate time to conduct a self-check would be 3-5 days after your period ends, when the hormonal breast tenderness is minimal.

What Changes Should You Watch For?

Immediately consult a gynaecologist in case you observe any of the following:

  • A lump or thickening of the breast or underarm that is new.
  • A breast size or shape change that cannot be explained.
  • Skin which appears dimpled, puckered, or like orange peel.
  • Inversion, redness or abnormal discharge of the nipples.
  • Constant pain in one area which is not associated with your menstrual period.

The majority of lumps are benign; however, only a clinical examination can be sure of this.

Self-Check vs. Professional Screening: Both Matter

Self-examination creates awareness, although it is not a substitute for clinical screening. Professional breast cancer screening in Bangalore involves equipment that identifies changes which are much too small to be detected by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I start breast self-examinations? Women are advised to start self-examination once a month in their early twenties. Knowing your normal is the best habit to have, especially when developed at an early age.

Is a mammogram safe? Yes. Mammograms involve low-dose X-rays and are considered safe and highly effective in detecting changes in the breasts before the symptoms manifest. The amount of radiation is very small and far below the recommended safety levels.

Does a family history of breast cancer mean I will get it too? Not necessarily. Family history is a risk factor and not a determinant of breast cancer. Early medical check-ups, a healthy lifestyle, and regular screening can greatly minimise that risk.

Every five minutes of a month, your health is worth it. When you find any changes or due to a long time without a clinical check, make an appointment with Dr Archana Agarwal to have a clinical check of the breast cancer screening in Bangalore.
